24 October 2019

Director John Leo WilkieOnce again we’re delighted to announce that acclaimed theatre and opera Director John Leo Wilkie joins the Festival Opera team to direct the 2020 season of Two Tales. One Town.

An experienced opera and theatre director who trained in programmes at the National Theatre and the Kings Head Theatre, John has worked at distinguished opera houses across Great Britain, including the Royal Opera House, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera and Opera Holland Park.

John shares Festival Opera’s passion for providing opportunities for young singers as a founding member of Opera Bohemia, a company dedicated to producing more operatic performances across his native Scotland, introducing dynamic productions to the big cities as well as remote parts of the country. He is also Creative Director of the newly launched MAKEMORE Festival.

John is excited about the prospect of travelling to New Zealand to work with Festival Opera. “It’s exciting to see the quality productions Festival Opera has delivered in its short history, and I am really looking forward to working with the cast and creative team to deliver a very special Traviata to the people of Hawke’s Bay”. We are grateful to the Art Deco Masonic Hotel for enabling John to direct this year’s season.
