THE MAGIC FLUTE

By W A Mozart
Directed and Conducted by José Aparicio

Mozart’s final opera Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), is a fairytale whose characters, driven forward by love and hatred, are in search of the ultimate truth. Danger, spells, tests of integrity, and actions both honorable and foul sweep us up into an enchanting world where nothing is quite as it seems. This celebrated opera is widely believed to be one of the most magical compositions ever written. Performed in the genre of singspiel, Die Zauberflöte is sung in German with English dialogues.

Festival Opera is proud to showcase some of New Zealand's finest homegrown talent, including Soprano Polly Ott (Queen of the Night), Tenor Oliver Sewell (Tamino), Soprano Emma Pearson (Pamina) and Bass-Baritone James Ioelu (Papageno).

This year's stellar kiwi cast will mentor students of youth singing programme Project Prima Volta (PPV) throughout the season, bestowing their music expertise and international performance experience on Hawke's Bay rangatahi. Our leads will be joined by some of the country's most accomplished rising opera stars including Project Prima Volta Graduates Katherine Winitana (NZ Opera Dame Malvina Major Studio Artist), Emmanuel Fonoti-Fuimaono (NZ Opera Dame Malvina Major Studio Artist), Caitlin Roberts, Tomairangi Henare, LJ Crichton, Taylor Wallbank, Samuel McKeever, Lofi Lolohea and Vili Moore; along with Hannah Ashford-Beck (Dame Malvina Major Studio Artist), Larissa Kent (NZ Opera Chorus) and Morgan King (New Zealand School of Music) who will join the collective of young artists on stage.

Live opera is back and it’s the perfect way to recharge your heart and soul! Don’t miss some of opera’s most recognisable music, including the famous ‘Queen of the Night’ aria...

BEHIND THE SCENES

Preparing to take the stage

Preparing to take the stage

Our young artists train hard before curtain up, and receive critical inspiration and coaching from our professional opera singers. You wouldn't know it when you come along to enjoy the opera, but training and preparation takes place in a disused apple pack house. It's a remarkable feat: the set is built, the rehearsals are directed and the concept comes to life in a space that was never meant to package up opera! Within these walls, our cast and creative team build relationships and share experience and expertise that enables the whole company to deliver excellence. We know, right....from a dis-used apple packing shed, no less!

Every performance counts

Every performance counts

It's no surprise that varied performance opportunities help young PPV singers to take the stage with confidence. Fundamental to our success is the inclusion of Project Prima Volta singers season after season. To feel confident to take the stage alongside experienced, professional artists, these young singers build their skill through many different performance opportunities - from singing Christmas Carols at the Hawke’s Bay Airport, to performing in a student opera during the Harcourt Hawke's Bay Arts Festival.
